The 2022 Big Island Open is now history.

From what I heard from many; they enjoyed it immensely. It was Hawaii's first USATT Sanctioned Tournament since November 2019. Special shout outs to all the players coming from Oahu and Maui, and mahalo to the local Big Island players that came from all the surrounding communities. We had a total of 31 players sign up, many first time tournament players and 4 juniors. The action was definitely competitive in all the divisions and there were some great matches played and tremendous table tennis action. I want to thank some very important people and organizations. Number ONE mahalo goes to John Romoa. John provided delicious morning coffee, some pastries, organized the lunch for both days, MORE than helped to setup everything and take down. Not only all that, but John played almost every event, even winning the U-1600, and is the best host to make everybody feel welcomed. Thanks also goes out to Rocco and his wife for being there every minute to assist in whatever needed to get done, extensive cleaning (covid) and helping so much in taking down everything. Thanks to Armadillo for coming over from Maui to play and helped setup and take down. Thanks to Robin808pingpong.com and others for picking up the lunches, setting them up, and keeping them going. Thanks to John Buck, Hilary, Kimi, Takumi, for helping in all aspects to keep the tournament running. I apologize for anyone I left out, but thanks, of course again, to all the players that came and supported the tournament and in that, supporting the sport of table tennis in Hawaii. A special THANK YOU to the Aloha Table Tennis Association for their generous donation to the tournament; when on Oahu, be sure to visit them, a full time table tennis club. We are tentatively looking at a possible November tournament the week before Thanksgiving with official word coming when it is certain and confirmed.

Saturday Lunch

Lunch was extensive on Saturday, an Asian delight of huge magnitude. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to take any photos, but everybody was eating big portions from the pork, to the chicken, to the sushi, to the rice, salad, and so much more. Mahalo to John Romoa for organizing it and for all the helpers to pick it up and present it. FANTASTIC! And, timed perfectly after the Super RR 1st round finished, ate, and ready for Round 2.
